Western Ukraine is a beautiful place full of adventure and amazing sights.

Ternopil Oblast

The Ternopil Oblast, otherwise known as Ternopil's'ka Oblast and Ternopillya, is located north of the Chernivtsi Oblast, south of the Rivne Oblast and the Lviv Oblast, east of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, west of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast and has a population of over 1,100,000. The capital city of the Ternopil Oblast is Ternopil is located in the northern part of the oblast and has a population of over 200,000. Some of the Ternopil Oblast's attractions include Optimisticheskaya Cave (also known as Optimistic Cave), Ozerna Cave and Verteba Cave, where archaeologists have discovered ancient weapons and jewelry from the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture. Other tourist attractions of the Ternopil Oblast include the ruins of Czerwonogród and Czerwonogrod Castle, Pochaiv Lavra, Vyshnevets Palace, Ternopil Castle, Berezhany Castle and Dzhuryn Waterfall, which is one of Ukraine's highest waterfalls.

Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast

The Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, also known as Ivano-Frankivs'ka Oblast, borders with Romainia, which is located to the south of the oblast, is located north of the Chernivtsi Oblast, south of the Lviv Oblast, east of the Zakarpattia Oblast, west of the Ternopil Oblast and has a population of over 1,300,000. The Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast's major cities include Ivano-Frankivsk, Kalush and Kolomyia. The capital city of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast is Ivano-Frankivsk, is located in the northen part of the oblast and has a population of over 200,000. There are several places in the oblast that offer beautiful landscapes surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, which are located in the southern and western parts of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. The Carpathian Mountains occupy nearly half of the whole region. Another attraction in the of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast's is the cavern complex in the Dovbush Rock. The city of Ivano-Frankivsk has some beutiful sights such as the Church of the Holy Resurrection, Stanislav fortress compound and Potocki palace, Fara, Ratusha (meaning city hall) and the Battle of Grunwald monument.

The city of Rohatyn has some sites of its own including the 14th century stone Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, remnants of the the 14th century town walls and gate, the 17th century wooden Church of the Holy Spirit, the ruins of the 17th century Dominican monastery, the 17th century Roman Catholic Saint Nicholas's Church in the Renaissance style, wooden Saint Nicholas's Church and the Statue of Roxolana. Born in the town of Rohatyn, Roxolana, also known as -Hürrem Sultan or Karima, was a legal wife of Süleyman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire. With hs 36 year-long reign, Süleyman the Magnificent, also known as Süleyman the Lawgiver, was the tenth and longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

The Pysanka museum, located in Kolomyia, Ukraine, is a museum dedicated to the beauty of the pysanka, the decorative Ukrainian Easter egg entirely made of and decorated with beeswax. The museum itself is shaped like a the decorative egg typical of eastern european culture and boasts a collection of over 10,000 pysanky.

Chernivtsi Oblast

The Chernivtsi Oblast, also referred to as Chernivets'ka Oblast, borders with Romainia & Moldavia, which are located south of the oblast, is located south of the Ternopil Oblast, the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and the Khmelnytskyi Oblast, west of southern part of the Vinnytsia Oblast and has a population of over 900,000. Among the Chernivtsi Oblast's major cities are Chernivtsi and Novodnistrovsk. The capital city of the Chernivtsi Oblast is Chernivtsi, is located in the center of the oblast and has a population of over 200,000. Khotyn Fortress, of the "Seven Wonders of Ukraine," is also located in the Chernivtsi Oblast. Some of the Chernivtsi Oblast's attractions include the Carpathian Mountains, the Bukovynian Mytropolyt residency and Kozmodemyanivska church. Some tourist attractions of the city of Chernivtsi are Chernivtsi Drama Theater, Regional Philharmonic Society, Organ and Chamber Music Hall, puppet-theatre, Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy, the Regional Museum of Fine Arts, Bukovynian Diaspora Museum, Museum of Folk Architecture and Way of Life and Central Palace of Culture. Chernivtsi has also hosted the Ukrainian Sidecar Motocross Grand Prix several times. The last time the event was held in Chernivtsi was in May of 2009.

Lviv Oblast

The Lviv Oblast, otherwise known as L'vivs'ka oblast, borders with Poland, which is located west of the oblast, is located north of the Zakarpattia Oblast, the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast south of the Volyn Oblast, west of the Rivne Oblast and has a population of over 2,500,000. The capital city of the Lviv Oblast is Lviv, is located in the center of the oblast and has a population of over 700,000. Some of the Lviv Oblast's tourist attractions include the Krekhivsky monastery, the Tustan city-fortress, Kamin-Veleten and the Skoliv nature complex. Other attractions of the Lviv Oblast include Brody Castle and the ruins of the old synagogue in the city of Brody, the Royal Palace in the city of Sambir, Svirzh Castle in the city of Svirzh, the Palace of Count Potocki, the Church of the Holy Spirit, St. George's Church in the city of Chervonohrad, Zolochiv Castle (also known as Złoczów Castle, the former residence of the Sobieski polish noble family) and the Stone Synagogue in the town of Zolochiv, Zhovkva Castle and the Collegiate Church of St. Lawrence in the city of Zhovkva and the 16th century Holy Cross Church, the 15th century Ascension Church and the 16th century St. George's Church in the city of Drohobych, Ukraine.

Zakarpattia Oblast

The Zakarpattia Oblast, also called Zakarpatska Oblast, is located south of the Lviv Oblast, west of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and has a population of over 1,200,000. Slovenia & Hungary are located west of the Zakarpattia Oblast and Romainia borders in the south. The Zakarpattia Oblast's major cities include Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, Khust, Berehoveand Vynohradiv. The capital city of the Zakarpattia Oblast is Uzhhorod, is located in the east of the oblast on the slovenian border and has a population of over 100,000. Some of the Zakarpattia Oblast's attractions include the Castle ruins, the Protestant fortress church, the Roman Catholic church and the Greek Orthodox church in the city of Khust, the 14th century Palanok Castle and Saint Nicholas Monastery in Mukachevo, Uzhhorod Castle and Bercsenyi Palace, a former synagogue, which is currently the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Old Wooden Church in the Museum of Folk Architecture and the Greek Catholic Cathedral in the city of Uzhhorod, and the ruins of a castle in Vynohradiv, Ugocsa Castle, Perenyi Castle, the Franciscan church and monastery and Our Lady's Church in the city of Vynohradiv, Ukraine. Others include the ruins of a castle in Vynohradiv, Hoverla mountain (the highest mountain in Ukraine), Bieszczady National Park (Bieszczadzki Park Narodowy), Ciśniańśko-Wetliński Park Krajobrazowy (Cisniansko-Wetlinski Landscape Park or Cisna-Wetlina Landscape Park), Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Sanu (Doliny Sanu Landscape Park or San Valley Landscape Park, Poloniny National Park, Uzhansky National Nature Park, Nadsianskij, or Nadsiansky Regional Landscape Park. Palanok Castle, the Chorna River Museum, Mykhailiv Orthodox Church and Nevytsky Castle, which were were nominated for the Seven Wonders of Ukraine are also located in the Zakarpattia Oblast.

Volyn Oblast

With Poland and Belarus to the north, the Volyn Oblast, also known as Volyns'ka Oblast and Volyn', is located north of the Lviv Oblast, west of the Rivne Oblast and has a population of over 1,000,000. The capital city of the Volyn Oblast is Lutsk, is located in the southeastern part of the oblast and has a population of over 200,000. Although it is Ukraine's poorest region, the Volyn Oblast has some fabulous sites of it's own. The 14th century Castle of Lutsk, the 17th century Catholic cathedral, the 18th century Orthodox cathedral, two 16th century Greek-Catholic churches, The 17th century Great Synagogue of Lutsk are among some of the Volyn Oblast's greatest symbols. The Volodymyr-Volynsky historical-cultural complex and the Villa-museum of Lesia Ukrainka though not elected, were nominated for the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

Rivne Oblast

With Belarus to the north, the Rivne Oblast, otherwise known as Rivnens'ka Oblast, Rivnenshchyna and Rivne, is located north of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast, the Ternopil Oblast, east of the Volyn Oblast, west of the Zhytomyr Oblast and has a population of over 1,100,000. The capital city of the Rivne Oblast is Rivne, is located in the southern part of the oblast and has a population of around 250,000. Some of the Rivne Oblast's tourist attractions include the Orthodox cathedral complex, Epiphany Cathedral, the Tatar Gate Tower, Lutsk Gate Tower, Ostroh Castle and the Trinity Church of the Mezhyrich Monastery city of Ostroh, Ukraine. The city of Rivne offers many sights including the Church of the Assumption, the Cathedral of the Intercession, the Cathedral of the Ascension, the classicism-style gymnasium building and about twenty monuments and memorials. Also in the Rivne Oblast in Demydivka, an urban village, where remains of an ancient city are preserved, archaeological findings have indicated that Demydivka were inhabited in the Bronze Age. Some ancient Roman coins dating to the 3nd century were also found in Demydivka. There are also ancient ruins of a castle in a village located about two kilometers from Demydivka called Lishnya. Also located in the Rivne Oblast, the Troitsk monastery and Dubno Castle were nominated for the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

Khmelnytskyi Oblast

The Khmelnytskyi Oblast, also referred to as Khmel'nyts'ka Oblast, is located north of Chernivtsi Oblast, south of the Zhytomyr Oblast and the Rivne Oblast, east of the Ternopil Oblast, west of the Vinnytsia Oblast and has a population of over 1,300,000. The capital city of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast is Khmelnytskyi, is located in the center of the oblast and has a population of over 250,000.Along with the Vinnytsia Oblast and northern Transnistria, the Khmelnytskyi Oblast is located in Podolia, a historical region, in which the Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle (located in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast) and Sofiyivsky Park (located in the Vinnytsia Oblast), two of the "Seven Wonders of Ukraine," are located. Some other tourist attractions located in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast's attractions include Letychiv Fortress, Medzhybizh Castle, Medjybizh National historical-cultural preserve and Kamyanets National historical-architectural preserve.

Zhytomyr Oblast

The Zhytomyr Oblast, otherwise known as Zhytomyrs'ka Oblast, shares a border with Belarus in the north. The Zhytomyr Oblast is located north of the Vinnytsia Oblast, east of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast and the Rivne Oblast, west of the Kiev Oblast and has a population of over 1,300,000. The capital city of the Zhytomyr Oblast is Zhytomyr, is located in the southern part of the oblast and has a population of almost 300,000. The northern part of the he Zhytomyr Oblast is where the Chernobyl disaster took place. The area remains devastated to this date however there are tourist agencies that offer packaged tours of the famous nuclear disaster site. Visitors are minimally exposed to radiation however it has been assessed that the tour is 100% safe and visitors are assured that the exposure to radiation is less then what you get when getting an X-ray it does not exceed the amount radiation exposed during a transcontinental flight. Tour prices range from $145.00 to $470.00 depending upon how many visitors per group and there are tours for up to groups of 18. Other tourist attractions of the Zhytomyr Oblast's include the Church of Saint Basil the Great, Stone village state preserve and Korolev Memorial Astronautical Museum, which were all nominated for the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

Vinnytsia Oblast

The Vinnytsia Oblast, also called Vinnyts'ka Oblast, is located north of the Odessa Oblast, south of the Zhytomyr Oblast, east of the Chernivtsi Oblast and the Khmelnytskyi Oblast, west of the Kiev Oblast, the Cherkasy Oblast and the Kirovohrad Oblast, borders with Moldavia, which is located to the south of the oblast and has a population of over 1,600,000. The Vinnytsia Oblast's major cities are Vinnytsia, Zhmerynka and Mohyliv-Podilskyi. The capital city of the Vinnytsia Oblast is Vinnytsia, is located in the northern part of the oblast and has a population of over 350,000. Along with the Khmelnytskyi Oblast and northern Transnistria, the Vinnytsia Oblast is also in Podolia. Some of the Vinnytsia Oblast's attractions include Saint Trinity Church, four Orthodox churches, a Turkish mosque and the Ksido palace in the town of Khmilnyk and the Afghan War Museum and Slavic War Memorial Park, Vinnytsia Regional Museum, The House of Gospel Baptist Church (reportedly one of the largest Evangelical Churches in all of Europe), Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov museum and Mykhailo Kotsybyns'ky museum in the city of Vinnytsia, Ukraine. Also located in the Vinnytsia Oblast, Mykola Pyrogov's Mansion Museum, Nemyriv Scythian settlement and an Ancient Slavic cave temple were nominated for the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

Western Ukraine is a beautiful place full of adventure and amazing sights. There are several Oblasts (ukrainian provinces), or regions that are typically referred to as part of western Ukraine. These regions are the Ternopil Oblast, the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, the Chernivtsi Oblast, the Lviv Oblast, the Zakarpattia Oblast, the Volyn Oblast, the Rivne Oblast, the Khmelnytskyi Oblast, the Zhytomyr Oblast and the Vinnytsia Oblast.
